What’s a Tax Refund?
A tax refund lets foreign tourists get back the VAT (Value Added Tax) they paid on purchases made in Korea. If you buy goods at tax-free stores and leave Korea within three months, you can claim a refund at the airport. Just show your purchases and receipts to customs, and get your cashback right away at the Tax Refund Counter. Note: your purchases must total over 15,000 won to be eligible.

How Does the Tax Refund Service Work?

Agencies provide tax refund services with counters, self-service kiosks, and mailboxes at airports and other locations. To qualify, you must:

  • Spend at least 15,000 won

  • Purchase within three months of leaving Korea

  • Be a foreign tourist staying in Korea for less than six months, or an overseas Korean who has lived abroad for over two years and is staying in Korea for less than three months

Tax Refund Steps
  1. Claim Your Boarding Pass: Keep your VAT refund receipts handy and don't check your luggage yet.

  2. Get Customs Approval: Show your goods and receipts to the customs officer for an export approval stamp.

  3. Check Your Luggage: After customs, head to the oversized baggage counter to check your luggage.

  4. Get Your Refund: Visit a tax refund counter or kiosk with your passport and tax refund receipt to get your cash refund in the Duty-Free Zone after security.
